With all the Danica mania going on, I happened to run across an article in USA Today from the Dec. 16th edition that made me do a little thinking.
I would like to say in a nutshell, that I hope Danica does well. It sounds like her controllers/promoters have a plan and it makes sense to me, as long as they stick to it.
I think that Danica can be good for NASCAR. I DO NOT believe that she is the fix that this sport needs, thats a whole different blog.
The ARCA & Nationwide series races that she participates in will have record viewership on the tube and I’d imagine that the seats at the track might be a little bit fuller for these events. I still say that the wreck-o-meter will be up a little bit, but so too will the entertainment value, especially when she gets pissed-off, and she will not disappoint us here.
Danica did well at the ARCA testing at Daytona, which brings me to the point here.
Did anyone know that there were 9 other women at these tests?????
If you did not listen to UWANTSOME, or go search the Internet for yourself, probably not. Why? From what I saw, most of them were just as pleasant on the eyes as Danica. In the limited amount of interviews that were available it looked like they all had good personalities. Most of them drove their respective cars as well as Danica, maybe not as fast, but they did not have Hendrick equipment either. Why were these women not recognized as Danica was. She has not done anything more in NASCAR than these other gals have, and I guarantee they don’t have the attitude that she does, except for maybe Milka Duno. I guess I just don’t get the Danica mania.
The article that I was referring to brought up a chart of women that have raced in NASCAR.
Source- USA Today, 12-16-2009
Janet Gutherie 1976-80 33 starts 5 top-10’s Sprint Cup
Patty Moise 1986-98 133 4 Nationwide
Sara Christian 1949-50 7 2 Sprint Cup
Diane Teel 1982-86 11 2 Nationwide
Shawna Robinson 1991-05 61 1 Sprint Cup/Nationwide
Tina Gordon 2001-04 14 1 Nationwide
How many of these women do you recognize? Shawna & Patti were racing in NASCAR’s hey-day. I remember Guthrie, but mainly for her Indy Series starts. The other 3, I would not have recognized them as NASCAR drivers. I don’t remember this kind of media fervor over these women, except for Guthrie whenever she ran the Indy 500. . I have personally meet both Shawna & Patti. I don’t care if I ever meet Danica.
Danica has won only 1 race in her career. And yes, she is the first woman to lead a lap at Indianapolis & the highest woman finisher(this is not NASCAR). She is not the first woman to get in a stock car and she won’t be the last. Will she be the best? Time will tell. I really wish that the media would be a little more even-handed in their reporting. A little more fair in their comparisons. And way more realistic in their expectations.
People, this will be fun to watch, but it may be a bit painful at times, also.
What do you think?
P.S. HAPPY HOLIDAYS TO ALL!!!!!

I agree with you and I don’t understand why the media is having this feeding frenzy. Well yes I do , NASCAR set it up that way.
I do wish her the best of luck on and off the track.
Ok, I’ll be the first to say it here – I hope Danica flops. I hope she falls flat on her face. Not because she is a woman, but because of what she represents – sponsors driving the sport instead of drivers.
The Danica frenzy, I believe, highlights the fundamental problem with NASCAR these days. Owners are searching for spokesmen/women instead of driving talent.
I think its perfect that her and Jr are finally connected together in the racing world. Have you ever seen two people worth so much money yet produce so little on the track?
Happy New Year everyone!
Hey Guys-
Thanks for the comments. Nate- I never thought of it that way. You are spot on. I wiah I could perform at my job like these two do and still get paid! I don’t dislike either one of em, but it is amazing that they make the money they do for underacheiving.
Nate, you speak the words of many, many people. I think that Danica is a shot in the arm to NASCAR but is not going to be the savior for all that is wrong. As for Junior, I am a fan so what I say wouldn’t help the debate. Bu,t if you look at recent “sons of legends” he has done better than Kyle Petty, Brandon Bernstein (NHRA I know), Ricky Hendrick, AJ Foyt IV, etc, he has been far more successful. Hard to follow the footsteps of a legend…..
Mark, you are absolutely right.
As much as I rag on Jr, I do like the guy and hope he can be successful again.
Danica “the product” is good for the sport.
Danica “the driver” I’m not so sure.
