Please don’t chase the tire

Hello again Racefans

Another race at Atlanta is in the books. I thought it was actualy a good race. Some weird things happened and we had quite a fight for the win between Jeff Gordon and Kurt Busch. Congratulations to Kurt for the win.

He also scored another perfect driver rating. He has done this 4 times now and is the only driver to accomplish this more than once. The criteria to achieve this stat in any particular race is to lead the most laps,  maintain the best average running position throughout the race, and have the most number of laps ran as the fastest car on the track. To do all of this is quite a feat,  and to do it 4 times in his career is pretty darn good too.

Another interesting stat that I found. With his win at Atlanta, one week after his brother Kyle won at Las Vegas, Kurt & Kyle have know won 4 times, back to back, on different tracks, on consecutive weekends. That is also a new record. Tim & Flonty Flock are in second place now having done it 3 times. Also, just for the record, Kurt & Kyle have  32 wins between the 2 of them at Sprint Cup level. Just some things that caught my eye. Congrats again to Kurt on the victory.

Hard-luck guy of the year has got to be Mark Martin.  3 races in a row with big trouble. Motors were the issue at California & Las Vegas, and at Atlanta he runs over something, blows a tire and shreds the right side of his car. You gotta feel sorry for the guy. His best finish of the year is a 16th at Daytona and now sits 34th in the standings. I really expected something better than this for him this year. It is not anything that he is doing wrong, just some really bad luck so far.

Brain-Fart award winner  is pretty easy this week.

 Drum-roll please——- JIMMY  WATTS

He is the gas-man for the #47 team of Marcos Ambrose. One of the team’s tires got away from them during a pit stop and then one of the #28 team’s pit-crew members “knocked it away” from their pit-box, and it went onto the infield. Jimmy Watts instinctively chased it down. Bad decision.  I believe the rule is that if a tire freely travels more that half way across pit lane it is a penalty. He should have just let it go. Jimmy now has a 4 week suspention with no monitary fines and I think that is fair and justice has been served here. He really put himself in danger with that move.

I want to give shout outs to

Jeff Gordon. 2nd place this week and still on top in the points.

Brian Vickers. 5th place this week and now 11th in the points

Kasey Kahne. Strong 7th place run and now 9th in the points

Tony Stewart. 8th this week and now 6th in the points.

Thats about all I have this week- What do you think.

Hey Dave, my buddy Dennis Terry knows Jimmy Watts and said the dude has quite a reputation for being a good guy in the pits.

Check out DT’s blog at thatsracin.com his page is called Lug NutZ for background on Jimmy’s really bad day.

    Great Blog Dave,

Mark had a really good car and he showed it on the restart when he was on the tail end of the lead lap. Mark pulled out a half a lap ahead of leader Kurt Busch. I sure hope they can get his luck turned around.

    Frank-
I feel so sorry for the. Martin has been a factor at every track so far this year, (while he’s still running) and has nothing to show for it.
